Quilt For A Cause – A Year in Review

Contributed by Colleen Babcock, December 4, 2018

2018 has been a trial year for Quilt For a Cause’s new business model which involves selling quilts continuously at a variety of venues rather than collecting quilts for one major triennial auction.  QFaC collects donated quilts and sells them to raise funds to donate to organizations that provide screening, treatment and support for breast and gynecologic cancer patients.  We invite you to review our 2018 activity here.  It’s been very successful!

Board Member Evelyn George and Quiltfolk Editorial Director Mary Fons

January brought the exciting news that the Quilt For a Cause Board would be interviewed and featured in an article in the Quiltfolk magazine.  QFAC directors and friends gathered at the home of Suzanne and Ed Irving to meet with the editors and staff of Quiltfolk.  QFAC  was featured in QuiltFolk Issue 6 — Arizona published April 25, 2018..

QFAC had another successful Road to California Bus Trip.  Over 90 QFAC directors and guests visited the  20th Road to California quilt show which features 10 special exhibits, hundreds of quilts including several entered by QFAC friends and Southern Arizona quilters.  Great fun was had by all who participated.

February and March We were very busy with the wonderful quilt guilds in Arizona. Many thanks to all of the guilds that support our organization.

2018 Quilts in the Huachucas Show

April started with our newest adventure, a partnership with the Tucson Botanical Gardens, We displayed and sold quilts at the Gardens from April through July. We sold over 160 quilts, met many new friends, and shared the benefits with the Gardens.  A special thanks to the folks at Cathey’s Sew and Vac for their support of this event, it was a Great success!

Tucson Botanical Gardens welcomes Quilt For a Cause with Floral quilts scattered throughout the gardens.

June – July was very busy as we closed out the sale at the Tucson Botanical Gardens with a Christmas in July party. We took the opportunity at the party to disburse $55,000 of 2018 funds to a wonderful group of recipients: Sharing the distribution are Arizona Oncology Foundation, Bag-it, El Rio Health Center, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition – Tucson, St. Elizabeth’s Health Center, Tucson Cancer Conquerors and  Tucson Medical Center Foundation. These organizations provide screening, treatment and support to cancer patients and survivors in Southern Arizona.

QFAC participated in Cathey’s Sew and Vac Christmas in July event this year, where we sold raffle tickets for our “Christmas Star” quilt and many patterns.  Thanks Donny, Carly and the family and staff at Cathey’s
